Crochet Chunky Sweater

Hey guys and dolls! This sweater is very easy to make, perfect for even the beginner crocheter. Once you know how to make basic stitches such as the slip stitch and the half double crochet you will fly through this project.

So to make this sweater you will need:
Weight 4 yarn
7.5 mm hook
5 mm hook

Front and back panels (both the same);

With your 7.5 mm crochet hook begin by chaining 52 for a small/medium size or 56 for a medium/large size.

Slip stitch into the 2nd chain from hook, then half double crochet into the next stitch. Continue with (slip stitch into next stitch, half double crochet into following stitch) to the end of the row. End this row with a slip stitch.

Next row: Ch 1(not counted as a stitch here or throughout). Then (half double crochet into next stitch, and then slip stitch into the following stitch) repeat this to the end of the row. End this row with a half double crochet.

Repeat these two rows over and over again until it measures from your collar bone to your hip. I did about 50 rows.

Sleeves:

With your 5 mm hook chain 12. Half double crochet into the 2nd chain from the hook. Continue with half double crochet to end of row.

Next row: Chain 1, then half double crochet in back loops only to end of row. Repeat this row until piece measures around your wrist. I did 18 rows.

Next row: Make 45 single crochets along the long edge of the piece.

Next row: Change to 7.5 mm hook. Chain 1, (slip stitch into next stitch, half double crochet into next stitch) across the row. End this row with a slip stitch .

Next row: Chain 1, (half double crochet into next stitch, slip stitch into next stitch) across the row. End this row with a half double crochet.

Repeat these two rows until piece measures the length of your arm. Fold piece in half lengthwise and single crochet piece together.

Assembly:
Place front panel on top of back panel. Arrange the sleeves to top of sweater making sure sleeve seams facing downwards. Attach yarn to bottom right hand corner of sweater and single crochet front and back panels together. Continue single crocheting up the top and make sure to single crochet the sleeves to the top.
Next attach yarn right beside seam where sleeve is attached to front\back panel. Single crochet in about 5-5.5 inches. Repeat for other shoulder. Turn sweater inside out.
Attach yarn to corner of neckline and half double crochet around neckline. Slip stitch to first half double crochet to close round. Then chain 1 and hdc in back loops only all the way around. Repeat for another 10 rows.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.

  3. It's such a beautiful sweater! Do you know approximately how much yarn is needed to make a Medium/Large? Thank you so much for sharing your pattern! :)

    1. Josie I made an XL by doing an initial chain of 72.
Sleeves you should always always do based on your personal underarm/top shoulder measurement. I hope this helps you!
